SEO for Indian exporters: how to be found by international B2B buyers, cover image

Indian export websites systematically under-invest in the exact things that would win them international buyers. Most read like the company profile PDF from 2014 got converted to HTML, translated once, and never touched again. International procurement teams in Dubai, Hamburg, Antwerp, New York and Sydney can smell that in six seconds and click straight to the next Indian supplier who took the site seriously. And they are searching, in serious volume, every single day.

This is the export SEO playbook we run for Indian manufacturers, textile mills, engineering exporters, chemical and pharma suppliers, and processed-food brands who want to move real weight of the buyer journey off Alibaba and IndiaMART and onto their own domain.

How the international B2B buyer actually researches an Indian supplier

The international procurement journey is longer and more paranoid than the domestic one. The buyer starts on a trade portal to build a longlist, cross-checks each candidate on Google, opens the supplier's own website, reads it against three others, checks LinkedIn for the founders and QA leads, then requests documentation. Your website is the shortlist filter, not the first touchpoint. If it does not answer the buyer's compliance, capacity and communication questions in the first minute, the shortlist moves without you.

What the international buyer wants to see, above the fold

  • Capabilities named against HS codes and precise product taxonomy, not vague industry categories like 'engineering solutions'
  • MOQs, lead times, current capacity utilisation, and factory audit status stated up front on every product family page
  • Certifications with real document links, ISO, BRC, FSSC, REACH, RoHS, USFDA, GMP, Halal, Kosher, with issue and expiry dates, not just logos in a footer
  • Photography and short video from the actual plant floor, warehouse, QA lab and shipping dock, not stock imagery of foreign factories
  • Case studies naming buyer country, volume shipped, product SKU family and delivery timeline, with client permission
  • A named QA head, export manager and founder with LinkedIn links, sameAs Person schema, and a real bio in English that reads like a person wrote it

International targeting done in the right order

Hreflang set correctly across country and language variants, country-specific landing pages built with local buyer language and pricing convention, internal linking that keeps authority flowing to priority markets, and canonical tags that stop the same product page from competing with itself across regions. Doing this in the wrong order costs six months of ranking. The order that works: pick the top three destination markets by current revenue or realistic ambition, build one country page per market, subordinate every product variant under those hubs, then layer hreflang once the structure is stable.

Programmatic pages that compound for exporters

  • Product-plus-HS-code landing pages for every meaningful specification combination, one page per canonical variant, indexable only where the demand justifies it
  • Country-plus-product pages for the top three markets and top ten SKUs, with local certification and shipping notes
  • Application or industry pages showing how the product is used downstream, with named case examples
  • Compliance and certification hubs that make it trivial for a compliance officer to download the current documentation set
"The international buyer is not looking for a beautiful website. They are looking for a supplier who has clearly done this before, at scale, without excuses."

Trust and authority signals that work harder than backlinks

  • Backlinks from chambers of commerce, industry associations, trade publications and buyer directories in your destination markets, five well-chosen links beat fifty low-authority ones
  • Speaking slots, panel mentions and articles in destination-market trade press, then linked from the site with proper Article schema
  • Google Business Profile for the head office and each plant, verified, kept alive with monthly photo drops and honest reviews
  • LinkedIn Company page with real weekly activity from the founder and export team, not just corporate broadcasts
  • Named authors on every technical or industry post on the site, with credentials that any procurement head can verify

The 120-day operating arc for an Indian exporter with a tired site

  • Weeks 1 to 3, audit indexation and international targeting, fix duplicate content across country variants, rebuild the certification hub with real documents
  • Weeks 4 to 8, rewrite the top ten product family pages with HS-code taxonomy, capacity data and buyer-country language, wire Organization, Product and Person schema
  • Weeks 9 to 14, ship the first three country landing pages for priority markets, build the case study library with named buyers where consent allows
  • Weeks 15 to 17, launch a monthly technical or industry article rhythm authored by the QA head or founder, monitor form fills and RFQ volume by country

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate website per country?
Almost never. A single site with correctly set hreflang and country-specific pages under subfolders works better and consolidates authority.
How important are trade directories like IndiaMART for SEO?
Useful for referral traffic and enquiry volume, weaker for SEO. Prioritise your own site's authority, use directories as a supplementary channel.
Should exporters translate the site into buyer-country languages?
For the top one or two markets where translation genuinely helps trust, yes, with hreflang set correctly. For everyone else, high-quality English with clear specifications converts better than badly translated local language pages.
How long before international organic enquiries show up in the CRM?
For a mid-sized exporter starting from a weak site, first international organic enquiries typically arrive in 90 to 150 days, and material RFQ volume in 6 to 9 months. The compounding after month 9 is what makes the channel worth the wait.
Is Alibaba enough on its own for Indian exporters?
Almost never past a certain scale. Alibaba controls the buyer relationship, caps margin and does not build brand equity. Own-site SEO shifts a growing share of enquiries onto direct, higher-margin channels while Alibaba remains the volume floor.
