SEO and generative engine optimization in India: what to actually change in 2026, cover image

Generative engines cite differently. They quote passages, not pages. They reward writing that answers the question inside 40 words, cites sources, and reads like an expert wrote it for a peer. Traditional SEO tactics still matter, but a fresh layer sits on top that most Indian brands are not touching.

What generative engines look for

  • Clean summary paragraphs at the top of every page, no throat-clearing
  • Bulleted lists that answer 'how' and 'why' questions in one screen
  • Author bylines with named humans, credentials and public profiles
  • Data tables and structured data for anything comparable
  • External citations to authoritative sources, not just internal links
  • FAQ blocks that use the exact question buyers ask in ChatGPT

What to change on your site this quarter

Rewrite the top of every commercial page as a 40-word answer to the primary question. Add author bylines with real credentials. Add FAQ blocks that mirror ChatGPT's phrasing of common queries. Add structured data for Organization, Article and FAQPage. That alone puts you ahead of 95% of Indian competitors on generative visibility.

What NOT to do

Do not fill pages with AI-generated fluff hoping to get cited more. Generative engines are trained to devalue that. Do not spam FAQ blocks with dozens of low-quality questions. Do not chase 'GEO tools' that promise magical AI visibility. Fundamentals win here too.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO sits on top of SEO. The same technical, content and authority fundamentals matter, plus a fresh layer of citation-friendly formatting.
How do I know if ChatGPT is citing my site?
Ask it directly with prompts your buyers use. Track brand mentions in Perplexity and Google AI overviews. Tools are catching up, but manual sampling is still the most honest measure.
