SEO website design checklist before launch
By Nimitt Bhatt · 1 July 2026 · 10 min

Launching a website with SEO gaps is not a neutral event. It is a slow bleed. Every week the site is live with broken foundations, Google logs a low-quality signal that takes months to unwind. The cheapest hour of SEO work you will ever spend is the hour before launch. This is the exact 40-item pre-flight we run on every build, grouped so an owner can hand it to a developer without translation.
Foundations (do not launch without these)
- →Every page has a unique title under 60 characters and a description under 160.
- →One H1 per page, matching the primary search intent, not the brand name.
- →URL structure is clean, lowercase, keyword-aligned, no dates or IDs in service URLs.
- →Internal links from the homepage reach every money page in one click, every supporting page in two.
- →sitemap.xml and robots.txt are live, correct, and referenced in Google Search Console.
- →Canonical tag on every page, self-referencing by default, pointing to the preferred domain (www vs non-www decided once).
- →HTTPS enforced sitewide, HTTP-to-HTTPS 301, and no mixed-content warnings.
- →301 redirect map for every old URL, with a fallback rule for anything missed.
Schema and machine-readable structure
- →Organization or LocalBusiness schema on the homepage with full NAP, sameAs links and logo.
- →Service schema on each service page with areaServed and provider linked to the Organization node.
- →BreadcrumbList schema on every non-home page.
- →FAQPage schema wherever a real FAQ exists, never faked.
- →Article schema on insight and blog posts with author, publisher and dates.
- →Product or SoftwareApplication schema on product pages, with real prices and reviews if present.
- →Speakable schema on answer-first blocks intended for voice and AI Overviews.
Performance and Core Web Vitals
- →LCP under 2.5s on mobile (mid-range Android on 4G, not desktop over WiFi).
- →INP under 200ms on the homepage, service pages and contact form.
- →CLS under 0.1 sitewide, with reserved space for images, embeds, banners and cookie consent.
- →Images compressed and served in WebP or AVIF, with width and height attributes.
- →Fonts self-hosted or preloaded, with font-display: swap.
- →Above-the-fold hero image preloaded, below-the-fold images lazy-loaded.
- →JavaScript bundle under 300KB gzipped on the critical path.
Discoverability and analytics
- →GA4 and Google Search Console verified and firing, with lead events configured.
- →Open Graph and Twitter card tags on every page, with a per-page image where relevant.
- →hreflang tags configured if the site serves multiple languages or regions.
- →No accidental noindex tags left over from staging (check every route).
- →Meta Pixel or other ad platform tags installed with deduplicated event IDs if server-side tracking exists.
Content and conversion
- →Every service page has: buyer-intent H1, proof block, pricing signal, FAQ, and one primary CTA.
- →Location and neighbourhood pages exist for every city or area you actively serve.
- →At least 6 pillar articles published before launch, not scheduled for later.
- →Contact page has a short form, WhatsApp and click-to-call, and an embedded map.
- →Trust proof (reviews, ratings, real client results) above the fold on every money page.
- →Author bylines with real credentials and LinkedIn on every insight post for E-E-A-T.
- →AI-search-ready formatting: answer-first blocks, question-based H2s, structured lists, real data points.
Final QA before you push the button
- →No orphan pages, no broken internal links, no 404 chains, no redirect loops.
- →Every page loads under 3 seconds on a mid-range Android over Ahmedabad 4G, not on your MacBook.
- →Screaming Frog or Sitebulb crawl completes clean, no unexpected 4xx or 5xx.
- →Search Console URL Inspection returns 'URL is available to Google' for the top 20 pages.
- →Mobile usability report in GSC is clean.
- →Backup taken, rollback plan documented, DNS TTL lowered 24 hours before cutover.
"The cheapest hour of SEO work you will ever spend is the hour before launch. The most expensive is the six months of recovery when you skip it."
We run this checklist on every SEO website design build before anything goes live. If you are redesigning rather than launching new, the tighter website redesign for leads: what to fix first list is the right place to start.
Frequently asked questions
- How long before launch should this checklist be run?
- Two weeks before scheduled launch. Not the day before. Real Core Web Vitals fixes, schema corrections and redirect maps take four to seven working days, and staging QA reveals issues that need dev time. Running the list on launch day means either delaying the launch or accepting broken foundations.
- Which items on this list are non-negotiable versus nice-to-have?
- The Foundations, Schema, Performance and Final QA sections are non-negotiable. Missing any of them creates real ranking or crawl damage. The AI-search formatting items in the Content section are increasingly non-negotiable through 2026 as AI Overviews take share.
- Do I need to run this on a redesign of an existing website?
- Yes, and add one more step: a full URL-to-URL 301 map from the old site to the new, plus a Screaming Frog crawl of the old site kept as a reference until the new site is indexed. Redesigns without a redirect map lose 30 to 60 percent of organic traffic in the first quarter.
- Can a developer run this checklist, or does it need an SEO?
- Developers can execute 30 of the 40 items given the list. The 10 that need judgement — H1 intent match, schema completeness, canonical strategy, redirect map, trust proof placement, AI-search formatting — need an SEO or a strategist. Hand the whole list to a developer with no SEO oversight and half of it will be interpreted wrongly.
