Why your website is not ranking on Google (and how to fix it)
By Nimitt Bhatt · 1 July 2026 · 10 min

If your website is not ranking on Google, the answer is almost never 'do more SEO'. It is one of six specific problems, and they must be fixed in a specific order. Skip the order and you either waste six months chasing content on a page Google cannot even crawl, or you build backlinks to a URL that is canonicalised away from itself. Here is the diagnostic we run for every new engagement at SEO Rise, in the order we run it.
1. Google cannot decide who the page is for
The title, H1 and first hundred words do not name a buyer, a location or an outcome. Google's ranking systems need a clear intent match before anything else matters. 'Welcome to Acme' is not a signal; 'B2B SEO agency for Indian SaaS companies in the Series A stage' is. Fix the hero block first: title tag under 60 characters with the primary query, H1 identical to the title in intent, and a first paragraph that answers the exact question the buyer typed.
2. The page is not actually indexable
Half the 'why am I not ranking' calls we take end here. The page never made it into Google's index in the first place. The usual suspects:
- →Blocked in robots.txt or by a stray noindex tag left over from a staging deploy
- →Canonical tag pointing to a different URL, so Google is indexing the other one and ignoring this one
- →JavaScript-only rendering with no server HTML, so Googlebot sees an empty shell on first crawl
- →Orphan page with zero internal links, so Google never discovers it in the first place
- →Soft 404 responses where the page returns 200 but the content is a 'no results' state
Check every one of these in Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool before touching content. If the page is not indexed, no amount of copywriting will save it.
3. Core Web Vitals are failing on Indian mobile
Indian buyers are on mid-range Android over 4G, not on a Macbook over office wifi. Google's ranking systems see the real experience, not the lab score. Aim for LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1 on real devices. Test in PageSpeed Insights with the 'Origin' data (real users), not the 'Lab' data. Most Indian sites we audit pass the desktop test and fail the mobile test on the same day, then wonder why rankings are stuck.
4. No topical depth around the page
A single service page floating alone rarely ranks in any competitive category. Google now expects the money page to be supported by three to eight cluster articles that reference it with intent-matched anchor text and are themselves internally linked back into the money page. If your 'B2B SEO agency India' page has no supporting articles on B2B keyword research, B2B content patterns and B2B backlink strategy, it looks thin next to competitors who have all three.
5. Weak or missing schema
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Article, Person. Missing schema is not itself a ranking failure, but its presence widens your SERP footprint, helps Google understand entity relationships and dramatically increases the odds of being cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT. On competitive queries in India, well-structured schema is often the difference between position 4 and position 8.
6. You are aiming at the wrong keyword
Half the pages we audit are optimised for a term the buyer does not search. 'Enterprise cloud transformation solutions' has 20 searches a month in India. 'SAP consultant Mumbai' has 2,900. Match your language to the actual query, add city and buyer modifiers where they belong, and cut every page that competes with another of your own pages for the same intent. Keyword cannibalisation quietly holds down more Indian B2B sites than any technical issue.
The order matters more than the list
Work through this diagnostic in order: intent, indexability, speed, depth, schema, keyword mapping. Fix problem one before you touch problem four. Founders who work through all six in a single 90-day sprint almost always see meaningful ranking recovery in the second half of the quarter, once Google has recrawled the fixes and reassessed the site.
"SEO is not a mystery. It is a sequence. When a website is not ranking, work through intent, indexability, speed, depth, schema and keyword mapping in that order."
If you want a founder-led read on why your specific pages are not ranking, request a free visibility review or start with our technical SEO audit. For deeper reading, indexation triage for large Indian sites covers the indexability layer in depth and Core Web Vitals in 2026, the INP shift covers the speed layer.
Frequently asked questions
- How long before a website starts ranking on Google?
- For fixed indexation and intent, movement often shows in 30 to 60 days. Competitive commercial keywords typically take 6 to 12 months of consistent work.
- Is it faster to redirect old pages or rewrite them?
- Rewrite the pages that carry buyer intent and history. Redirect only when the URL itself is a liability. You almost never gain by starting over on a clean domain.
- Should I hire an SEO agency or fix these six problems myself first?
- If the six problems above are new to you, hire someone to run the diagnostic. If you have already run URL Inspection on your top pages, checked Core Web Vitals on real Indian mobile and can list your topical clusters, you probably have enough internal skill to fix most of it and only need help on schema and content depth.
- How do I know if I have a keyword cannibalisation problem?
- Search Console shows it clearly. Filter by a target query and look at which of your pages Google is ranking. If two or more of your URLs are ranking for the same query on different days, you have cannibalisation and one of the pages needs to be consolidated, redirected or intent-shifted.
