ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity, brand citation benchmark 2026

ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity, brand citation benchmark 2026, cover image

Every founder now asks the same question, is my brand being mentioned when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity about my category. The answer is knowable, and it is different for each engine. This is our first public benchmark, run across 200 commercial queries in the India English locale, on the three engines that matter for buying intent in 2026.

The full Gemini Brand Citation Leaderboard is live and updates continuously. This post is the wider benchmark, why the numbers differ across engines, what the differences say about how each model retrieves, and what a working brand should do about it.

Headline finding, the three engines disagree more than they agree

Across 200 commercial queries, only 18% of brand citations appeared in all three engines. Roughly 44% appeared in exactly two, and 38% were unique to a single engine. The overlap is small enough that a brand tracking one engine is missing most of the picture.

How each engine differs

  • ChatGPT with browsing leans on established authority and reviewed sources, Wirecutter, national publishers, older domains. It rewards long-standing brand recognition.
  • Gemini leans on Google's own graph, Search, Business Profile, Knowledge Panel entities. It rewards structured data and verified entity presence.
  • Perplexity leans on freshness and citations you can click, Reddit, community forums, recent news. It rewards brands that show up in ongoing conversations.

The method, in enough detail to replicate

We built the 200-query set across ten commercial categories relevant to Indian founders, SaaS, D2C, local services, professional services, education, real estate, healthcare, exporters, manufacturers and consultants. Each category has 20 queries, split evenly between top-of-funnel discovery, mid-funnel comparison and bottom-of-funnel buying intent.

Each query was run three times per engine over a two-week window to control for freshness variance. We recorded every brand name that appeared in the answer body and in the citation footer, then normalised for spelling and legal-entity variants. Data collection uses our own AI Search Visibility Checker for Gemini and manual runs for ChatGPT and Perplexity, since those two do not expose an accessible API in the same shape yet.

What wins on ChatGPT

Depth and age of coverage. If a brand has been reviewed by a recognised publisher in the last three years, it shows up. Freshness matters less than the presence of a credible third-party writeup. This is why some brands that no longer buy media still dominate ChatGPT answers.

What wins on Gemini

Entity clarity in the Google graph. Verified Business Profile, consistent NAP, clean schema.org markup on the site, and a Knowledge Panel-worthy About page. Gemini treats Google as ground truth and cites accordingly. This is the engine our Google Business Profile Optimisation work directly moves.

What wins on Perplexity

Recent, clickable conversation. Reddit threads, active forums, recent news and podcast mentions. If your brand has not been discussed in the last six months, Perplexity treats you as historical, not current. This is where content marketing and community presence pay directly.

The India-specific findings

  • In India English queries, home-grown brands are meaningfully under-represented on ChatGPT versus their real market share, because English-language third-party coverage is thin.
  • Gemini most fairly reflects Indian brand market share, because it draws on Business Profile and local citations directly.
  • Perplexity over-represents brands with active Indian Reddit and Twitter presence, and under-represents brands that only run traditional PR.
"You cannot rank in AI answers by writing more blog posts. You rank by being entity-clear on Google, credibly reviewed on the open web, and actively discussed in communities."

What a working brand should do, this quarter

Split the work three ways. For ChatGPT, invest in one or two credible third-party reviews, either by pitching a publisher or by getting listed in an authoritative buyer's guide. For Gemini, tighten your Google Business Profile, verify your entity in Google's Knowledge Graph, and ship JSON-LD schema on every commercial page. For Perplexity, seed and nurture two or three category-relevant Reddit or community threads that mention your brand alongside genuine advice, not spam.

Where the benchmark is limited, honestly

Two hundred queries is enough to see the shape, not enough to price a category with statistical certainty. The India English locale is one of many. Model behaviour changes month to month. We will re-run the benchmark quarterly and update this post with the delta each time.

Frequently asked questions

How often will the benchmark be updated?
Quarterly. The Gemini leaderboard is live and updates continuously; the multi-engine benchmark is a heavier lift and runs every three months so the delta is meaningful, not noise.
Can I get the raw data?
Yes, for a specific category. Write to hello@seorise.io with the category you want and we will share the anonymised query and citation set for it.
Does paying for AI ads help?
Not yet in a measurable way. Perplexity and Google have started AI answer ads, but paid presence in an AI answer does not translate to the same citation trust as an organic mention. Optimise for organic citation first.
Which engine should I prioritise?
Gemini for local and India-first buying intent, ChatGPT for global and enterprise buying intent, Perplexity for research-heavy and technical buying intent. Most brands need presence on at least two of the three.
