Getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews

Getting cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, cover image

The buyer's first read on your category is no longer a blue link. It is a paragraph written by an answer engine, with a handful of sources cited below it. Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini Deep Research and Claude with web are now mediating a real share of high-intent B2B, SaaS, healthcare and services queries in India. If your brand is not one of the sources being cited, the buyer never sees you.

Generative Engine Optimisation is how you become one of those sources. It is not a separate discipline from SEO. It is a specific set of decisions layered on top of SEO that decides whether a language model can find you, trust you, and lift you cleanly into its answer.

Snapshot, what the citation actually requires

  • The page ranks in the top 10 organically for the underlying query. This is still the single strongest predictor of an AI citation. Perplexity and Google AI Overviews pull heavily from the classic organic set.
  • The answer to the query sits in the first 60 to 120 words of the page, phrased as a self-contained statement, not buried after a hero and three testimonials.
  • The page carries an original artefact the model can attribute: a framework, a benchmark, a comparison table, a data point, a named process. Recycled stitched-together content does not earn a citation.
  • Entity signals resolve cleanly: a real author with a byline and LinkedIn, Organization schema, sameAs links to Crunchbase or Wikidata, and a consistent brand string across the site.
  • The brand is mentioned by third parties the model already trusts, industry publications, podcast transcripts, GitHub, Reddit threads, review sites, at a rate proportionate to competitors already being cited.

The five surfaces, and how they differ

Treating ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews as one thing is the single most common mistake. They behave differently and reward different pages.

  • Google AI Overviews leans hardest on classic ranking signals, structured content, schema, and E-E-A-T. If you already rank in positions 1 to 5, this is your fastest citation win.
  • Perplexity is transparent about sourcing and rewards freshness, clarity and named authorship. A well-structured comparison page updated in the last 90 days often outperforms a stronger domain running stale content.
  • ChatGPT search draws from a wider set including newer and less link-heavy pages, but weights brand mention density and entity resolution more than the others. This is where third-party mentions do the heaviest lifting.
  • Gemini Deep Research favours pages that hold up under a multi-hop chain of sub-queries, meaning original data and clearly labelled sections beat marketing prose.
  • Claude with web tends to cite fewer, higher-trust sources. Domain reputation and clean citation history matter disproportionately.

The audit sequence we run

The first job is not to write. It is to see. For every brand we take on for a GEO engagement, the first two weeks look like this.

  • Query set. Extract the 40 to 80 buyer queries that actually earn revenue today, from Search Console, sales call transcripts and CRM notes. Not the queries a keyword tool suggests.
  • Answer engine mapping. Manually run each query across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, in a clean session, in a location that matches the buyer. Record the cited sources for every one.
  • Gap grid. Plot our brand against the top three cited competitors on every query. Which pages of theirs are cited, what artefact do those pages carry, and which of our pages are missing entirely.
  • Entity health check. Verify Organization schema, author bios, sameAs links, brand mention density on the 20 most-cited third-party publications in the category.
  • Priority list. Rank the queries by revenue value times the effort to earn the citation. Ship in that order.

What actually earns citations in India

The Indian answer-engine surface is younger and more contestable than the US one. A well-structured, well-cited page from an Indian founder can outrank a global competitor on India-specific queries in a way that would be almost impossible on the classic SERP. We see this consistently for SaaS pricing pages that name Indian competitors, B2B alternatives pages that carry rupee pricing and GST clarity, healthcare pages written by named clinicians, and legal or compliance pages that reference the actual Indian statute.

The lift comes from being genuinely useful in an Indian context, not from translating a US page. The models notice.

"AI Overviews are a referendum on your existing content quality. They magnify whatever is already true about your site, and they magnify the gap between you and the competitor being cited above you."

What does not work, and quietly wastes budget

  • Adding an FAQ section at the bottom of an existing page and expecting it to earn citations. The FAQ needs to be the answer, structured near the top.
  • Chasing AI-specific schema. Standard Article, FAQPage, Product and Organization schema does the entire job. There is no AI schema to add.
  • Buying mentions on low-trust content sites in the hope of moving ChatGPT. It moves nothing and pollutes the entity graph.
  • Turning every page into a wall of bullet lists. Models want a mix of a clear answer, supporting prose, and one attributable artefact per page.

Measurement without pretending it is precise

The honest measurement stack in 2026 is a mix. Rank tracking for AI Overviews inclusion where available. Manual weekly checks on the top 40 queries. Server log analysis for GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended crawl frequency. Referral traffic from ChatGPT and Perplexity in GA4, imperfect but directional. Brand search volume as a lagging proof that the citations are landing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be ranking on Google to be cited in AI answers?
For Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, yes in most cases. A page in positions 1 to 10 is dramatically more likely to be cited. For ChatGPT and Claude, ranking helps but is not required if the brand carries strong third-party mentions.
How long does GEO take to show results in India?
Faster than classic SEO on the surface, slower on the compounding. First citations on well-structured pages that already rank can appear inside 30 to 45 days. Building a citation footprint across a full category is a 6 to 12 month effort.
Should I block GPTBot and PerplexityBot from crawling my site?
Only if you have a specific reason to opt out of training data. Blocking them also blocks your citations. For almost every brand we work with, the correct answer is to allow the crawlers, monitor their frequency, and treat the citations as high-intent distribution.
Is GEO different for B2B, SaaS and services brands in India?
The mechanics are the same. The artefacts differ. SaaS wins on integration pages, alternatives pages and pricing clarity. B2B wins on named case studies with real numbers. Services brands win on named authors, statutory references and city-specific proof.
