SEO vs AI search: what business owners need to know
By Nimitt Bhatt · 3 July 2026 · 10 min

Every second LinkedIn post now claims SEO is dead. It is not. Google still handles more search than every AI engine combined, and every AI engine (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude) leans on Google's index or a Bing-flavoured mirror of it as the retrieval layer. If you disappear from Google, you disappear from AI too. What has genuinely changed is the top of the funnel: for consideration-heavy queries, a growing share of Indian buyers now ask an AI assistant to shortlist providers before they ever open Google. Winning in 2026 means being present in both places, and the good news is most of the discipline overlaps.
What stays exactly the same
- →Technical health: clean indexation, mobile speed under 3 seconds on a mid-range Android, valid schema, no orphan pages, no soft 404s. Table stakes for both Google and AI retrieval.
- →Content depth and topical authority. Google still rewards sites that cover a topic comprehensively, and AI engines cite the same pages disproportionately.
- →Backlinks from real, relevant Indian and international publishers. Still one of the strongest ranking signals on Google, and third-party citations remain the strongest entity signal for AI models.
- →Local proof: Google Business Profile, real reviews, real photos, consistent NAP. This layer is if anything more important for AI search, because models use it to disambiguate similarly named businesses.
What genuinely changes
- →Direct-answer formatting on the first screen of every commercial page matters more than clever headlines. 40 to 60 words that name the service, buyer, geography and one proof point is the block that gets cited.
- →Entity clarity and authorship become ranking signals for AI. A page written by 'The Team' underperforms a page written by a named consultant with credentials, LinkedIn sameAs and consistent bio across the web.
- →Citations across trusted third-party sites feed AI training data more directly than PageRank ever did. One thoughtful guest essay on a real Indian trade publication is now worth more than a hundred low-grade directory backlinks.
- →FAQ, comparison and framework pages become disproportionately valuable. These are the formats AI engines lift most often when responding to buyer queries in shortlist mode.
What business owners should do in the next quarter
- →Audit your top 10 commercial pages. Rewrite the hero block on each as a direct-answer paragraph and add 6 to 10 FAQs per page.
- →Add Person schema and full bios (credentials, LinkedIn, prior roles, sameAs) for every senior consultant or founder who is client-facing.
- →Publish two comparison pages and one framework page over the next 90 days. These are the formats AI engines quote most often.
- →Keep doing everything you were already doing on Google: technical SEO, content depth, GBP, reviews, backlinks. Nothing there has become obsolete.
"AI search does not replace Google SEO. It stacks on top of it and rewards specificity, authorship and entity clarity. Everything else you already do still matters."

For the entity layer specifically, the author and entity layer for AI citations covers schema and third-party citations in depth. Full engagement shape on our AI search and GEO consulting page.
Frequently asked questions
- Will AI search kill click-through rates from Google?
- It has already reduced CTR on informational queries where the AI Overview answers the question in-line. Commercial and shortlist queries are less affected, and in many categories AI referrals are additive: a buyer who found you via ChatGPT often then Googles you by brand. Total qualified traffic has held or grown for most of our Indian B2B and services clients through 2025 and into 2026.
- Should I stop investing in SEO and pivot fully to AI search optimisation?
- No. The two share 80 percent of the underlying work: technical health, content depth, backlinks, GBP, reviews. The remaining 20 percent (direct-answer formatting, entity signals, comparison pages) is additive, not a replacement. Any 'GEO agency' asking you to abandon SEO fundamentals is selling you a story.
- Is Google AI Overview traffic worth optimising for if it does not show clicks?
- Yes. Even without a click, being cited in an AI Overview creates a brand impression at the moment of highest intent. Buyers who see you cited by Google's own AI treat you as a trusted shortlist candidate. The click follows on the next branded search, which is where measurement starts to look confusing until you track branded search volume alongside organic clicks.
- Which AI engine matters most for Indian buyers today?
- In order of Indian B2B relevance in 2026: Google AI Overviews (largest reach), ChatGPT with browsing (strongest in shortlist queries), Perplexity (fastest-growing among tech-savvy buyers), Claude (smaller reach but strong in enterprise research). Optimising the fundamentals covers all four simultaneously.
